Blues Bow out of Sussex Senior Cup
It was another midweek fixture at Hanbury Park for the Heath as they welcomed Broadbridge Heath on a fresh Tuesday night. The day before, the Club announced the departure of first-team manager Jay Lovett, and the appointment of former club captain Naim Rouane and a new signing Lewis Finney joining from Burgess Hill.
The game, like our previous 2 matches began with a minute silence for Tony Sim. The first at Hanbury Park since his passing. The Blues suffered an early blow in the match, conceding in the 13th minute with a fantastic strike which left Alfie Jones with no chance, despite the goalkeeper’s fantastic start to the game.
Heath thought they should have had a penalty on the half-hour mark, Charlie Pitcher steaming through the Bear’s back line and going down in the area. The referee waved the calls away. The visitors doubled their lead in the 36th minute with a breakaway goal after winning the ball on the halfway line, and Heath ended the half 2 goals down.
The break gave Rouane time to re-energise his troops and the Blues sprung into life in the second half . Just 4 minutes in, debutant Lewis Finney slotted the ball into Greenshall’s bottom left-hand corner and pulled the Heath back into the game. The Heath thought they had found an equalizer late on, substitute George McCarthy smashing the ball past the Broadbridge number one, the linesman ending the celebrations prematurely.
Hayden Skerry who had been booked in the first half was shown a second yellow card late on and was given marching orders. The Blues couldn’t find their leveller before the referee brought the game to a close, the Heath now out of the Sussex Senior Cup.
